Overview

Kohler, Wisconsin is proof that extraordinary golf doesn't require a coastal zip code. Tucked along the Lake Michigan shoreline and the Sheboygan River, Destination Kohler packs four Pete Dye championship courses and one par-3 course into a compact, resort-controlled experience that rivals anything in the country. Whistling Straits' Straits Course -- a links-style layout built on a former army airfield along Lake Michigan -- hosted the 2021 Ryder Cup (the one where Team USA dominated 19-9) and multiple PGA Championships. It is, without qualification, one of the greatest courses in America.

The Straits Course is the headliner, but the supporting cast is equally impressive. The Irish Course at Whistling Straits offers a more inland links experience with the same Pete Dye DNA. Fifteen minutes south at Blackwolf Run, the River Course and Meadow Valleys Course carve through dense Wisconsin woodland and the Sheboygan River valley, delivering a completely different aesthetic -- tree-lined fairways, dramatic elevation changes, and river crossings that feel more like the Pacific Northwest than the Midwest. The Baths of Blackwolf Run, a 10-hole par-3 course, is perfect for a warm-up round, a casual afternoon, or settling bets.

The American Club is the anchor property -- one of only two five-star resort hotels in the Midwest. Originally built in 1918 as housing for Kohler Company immigrants, it's been transformed into a luxury hotel with multiple restaurants (including the acclaimed Immigrant Restaurant), a world-class spa (Kohler Waters Spa), and the kind of curated resort experience where every detail has been considered.

Kohler is a pilgrimage destination. Groups don't stumble into Kohler -- they plan trips months in advance because they want to play the courses that hosted the Ryder Cup and PGA Championship. The season is short (May through October), the weather is part of the challenge, and the experience is once-in-a-lifetime for most golfers.

Courses · 5

Whistling Straits (Straits Course)

Resort · Championship

$350-$500

Best for: The bucket-list round. Period. This is a Ryder Cup venue, a multi-time PGA Championship host, and one of the most dramatic courses in America. The Lake Michigan setting, the Pete Dye design, and the walking-with-caddie experience create a round you'll talk about for the rest of your life.

Insider tip: Take the caddie. At $90 per person, it's the best money you'll spend on the trip. The caddies know every line, every wind pattern, and every green break. They'll also keep your pace of play on track and help you appreciate the course's nuances. The Straits Course has over 1,000 bunkers (many unmarked), and the caddie will save you from several of them. Also: bring a windbreaker regardless of the forecast. Lake Michigan wind is constant and the exposed routing means there's no shelter.

Whistling Straits (Irish Course)

Resort · Challenging

$200-$375

Best for: The warm-up for the Straits Course or the more accessible links experience for golfers who find the Straits Course too demanding. The Irish Course has the same Pete Dye links aesthetic -- mounding, fescue, pot bunkers -- but is less exposed to Lake Michigan wind and slightly more forgiving off the tee.

Insider tip: Play the Irish Course the day before the Straits Course. It introduces you to Pete Dye's design language (mounding, blind shots, fescue, pot bunkers) without the full-throttle difficulty of the Straits. Carts are allowed on the Irish, so if anyone in the group has mobility concerns, this is the Whistling Straits experience they can enjoy. The 45% replay rate for a second round on the same day is outstanding value.

Blackwolf Run (River Course)

Resort · Championship

$200-$350

Best for: The course that started it all. Blackwolf Run's River Course was Pete Dye's first Kohler design (1988) and many architecture enthusiasts consider it his best work in Wisconsin. The Sheboygan River routing is dramatic and the woodland setting provides a completely different experience from the links-style Whistling Straits courses.

Insider tip: The River Course is the course that golf architecture nerds will tell you is the best of the four Kohler layouts. The Straits Course gets the major championships and the press, but the River Course's routing through the river valley -- with dramatic elevation changes, river crossings, and wooded corridors -- is a more intimate and varied golf experience. Play it and form your own opinion. The back nine (especially holes 9-14) is one of the best stretches of golf in the Midwest.

Blackwolf Run (Meadow Valleys Course)

Resort · Moderate-Challenging

$175-$300

Best for: The most accessible of the four Kohler championship courses. Meadow Valleys has wider fairways and less extreme elevation changes than the River Course, making it a better fit for groups with varied skill levels. It's also the best choice for a 36-hole day when paired with the River Course.

Insider tip: Play Meadow Valleys in the morning, River Course in the afternoon. The Meadow Valleys will warm you up on Pete Dye's style without punishing you, and the River Course in afternoon light (especially in late summer and fall) is one of the most beautiful rounds in golf. The combined replay discount makes the 36-hole day at Blackwolf Run one of the best values in the Kohler system.

The Baths of Blackwolf Run

Resort · Easy-Moderate

$75-$125

Best for: The perfect warm-up, cool-down, or side bet round. The Baths is a 10-hole par-3 course that plays through the same gorgeous Wisconsin landscape as the championship courses. Great for arrival day, a morning warm-up before a championship round, or an afternoon wind-down. Also ideal for non-golfers in the group who want to experience Kohler golf without the full championship commitment.

Insider tip: The Baths is where side bets and bragging rights happen. It's a pure short-game test -- wedges, short irons, and putting. Suggest a nassau or skins game on The Baths and watch the competitive intensity spike. Also a great way to ease into the trip if anyone in the group is rusty or nervous about the championship courses.

Lodging

Premium

The American Club

$400-$900

The only Forbes Five-Star resort hotel in the Midwest. Originally built in 1918 as dormitory housing for Kohler Company immigrant workers, meticulously restored into a world-class resort. 241 rooms with Frette linens and Kohler fixtures (naturally). Multiple restaurants including The Immigrant (fine dining), Horse & Plow (pub fare), and The Wisconsin Room (Wisconsin supper club). Kohler Waters Spa is a destination in itself. Golf concierge handles all tee times and packages. Stay-and-play packages that bundle rooms with golf are the standard approach. This is where you stay at Kohler -- it's part of the experience.

The Carriage House

$350-$750

Adults-only boutique hotel adjacent to The American Club. Reopened in May 2026 with modernized spaces and KOHLER-designed bathrooms. Includes a wellness-inspired breakfast and evening reception. More intimate and contemporary than The American Club. Ideal for couples or groups who want luxury without the full resort bustle.

Mid-Range

Inn on Woodlake

$200-$400

Kohler's more casual lodging option, located adjacent to the Shops at Woodlake and a short walk from The American Club. Modern rooms at a step below the American Club price point. Access to the same golf booking system and resort amenities. The smart choice for groups who want the Kohler golf experience without the full Five-Star hotel price.

Blue Harbor Resort (Sheboygan)

$175-$350

Lakefront resort in Sheboygan, 15 minutes from Blackwolf Run and 20 minutes from Whistling Straits. Waterpark, pools, and Lake Michigan views. A good option for groups with families or for those who want a resort experience at lower prices than The American Club. The drive to the courses is short and scenic.

Budget

Holiday Inn Express Sheboygan

$120-$225

Standard chain hotel in Sheboygan, 15-20 minutes from both Blackwolf Run and Whistling Straits. Clean, reliable, includes breakfast. No resort amenities but significantly cheaper than Kohler properties. The practical choice for groups that want to spend the budget on green fees rather than the hotel. Pool and fitness center on-site.

VRBO/Airbnb Sheboygan Area

$150-$350

The vacation rental market near Kohler is limited compared to resort destinations, but lakefront homes and houses in Sheboygan are available. A 3-4 bedroom home near Sheboygan for $200-$300/night split 6-8 ways is solid value. The downside is losing the American Club experience -- part of Kohler's magic is the resort itself.

Dining

The Immigrant Restaurant (at The American Club)

$$$$

Fine Dining / Tasting Menu

The flagship restaurant at The American Club. Six intimate dining rooms each themed after a different immigrant group that helped build Kohler. Tasting menus and a la carte options with locally sourced ingredients. Excellent wine program. This is the trip's special dinner -- reserve 2+ weeks ahead. Expect $120-$175 per person with wine pairings. Jacket suggested but not required.

The Horse & Plow (at The American Club)

$$-$$$

American Pub / Wisconsin Supper Club

The American Club's casual pub. Wisconsin cheese curds, burgers, Friday fish fry, and a solid craft beer selection. The atmosphere is warm and pub-like -- perfect for post-round recap over beers. No reservation needed for parties under 8. This is the everyday dinner option and it's genuinely good.

The Wisconsin Room (at The American Club)

$$$

American / Wisconsin Supper Club

Breakfast and dinner in a grand dining room with Wisconsin supper club traditions -- prime rib, relish trays, Old Fashioneds. The Sunday brunch is a Kohler tradition. Group-friendly with a convivial atmosphere. This is the in-between option -- nicer than the Horse & Plow, less formal than The Immigrant.

River Wildlife (at Blackwolf Run)

$$$-$$$$

Lodge Dining

A unique Kohler dining experience -- a log cabin lodge accessible by shuttle from The American Club. Multi-course family-style meals with game meats, foraged ingredients, and a hunting-lodge atmosphere. Wine and cocktails paired to the menu. An unforgettable group dinner that feels nothing like a hotel restaurant. Limited seating -- reserve well in advance.

Whistling Straits Restaurant

$$$

American / Steakhouse

On-site at Whistling Straits with views of the Lake Michigan bluff. Steaks, seafood, and Wisconsin favorites. The natural post-round destination after playing the Straits or Irish courses. The patio overlooking the 18th green and Lake Michigan is spectacular on a summer evening.

Pro Tips

  1. 1

Book a caddie for the Straits Course. At $90 per person, it's one of the best investments in golf travel. The Straits Course has over 1,000 bunkers, many of which are unmarked and blend into the fescue. The wind off Lake Michigan changes club selection by 2-3 clubs on exposed holes. A good caddie is the difference between an 85 and a 95 for most golfers.

  2. 2

Play the four courses in ascending order of difficulty: Meadow Valleys first, then River Course, then Irish Course, then Straits Course as the finale. Each course introduces more Pete Dye elements -- you'll be prepared for the Straits Course's complexity by the time you get there.

  3. 3

The 45% replay rate for a second round on the same day is the best value hack at Kohler. Play a full morning round, grab lunch, and play a twilight round at nearly half price. On the longest summer days, you can comfortably finish a 1:30pm start before sunset.

  4. 4

Bring rain gear and layers regardless of the forecast. Lake Michigan creates microclimates that can shift conditions in 30 minutes. A sunny 75F morning on the Straits Course can turn to 60F with 25mph wind by the time you reach the lakeside holes on the back nine.

  5. 5

The American Club is part of the Kohler experience -- don't skip it for a budget hotel. Staying at The American Club gives you priority golf booking, resort shuttles, access to the Kohler Waters Spa, and the Immigrant Restaurant. The stay-and-play packages that bundle everything are the standard approach and the best value.
