St. Augustine & Ponte Vedra, Florida
Where America's oldest city meets the most famous island green in golf — history, beach, and THE PLAYERS Championship in one trip.
Overview
St. Augustine and the Ponte Vedra Beach corridor deliver a rare combination: world-class championship golf anchored by TPC Sawgrass, the home of THE PLAYERS Championship and its iconic island green 17th hole, paired with one of the most charming historic cities in America. This is not a one-note golf destination — it is a legitimate vacation that happens to have bucket-list golf at its center.
TPC Sawgrass Stadium Course is the headliner. The 17th hole — the par-3 island green — is the most photographed hole in golf and the source of more group-chat trash talk than any other. But the Stadium Course is far more than one hole. Pete Dye's design is a relentless strategic test from tee to green, and the conditioning is immaculate year-round. The nearby Dye's Valley Course is an underrated complement — a serious test without the Stadium's price tag. Add World Golf Village's King & Bear (Palmer and Nicklaus collaboration) and Slammer & Squire, and you have four days of varied, excellent golf without repeating a course.
Beyond golf, St. Augustine is America's oldest city, founded in 1565. The historic district is walkable and genuinely interesting — Castillo de San Marcos, the Lightner Museum, St. George Street's shops and restaurants. The food scene punches well above its weight for a city this size. And with Ponte Vedra Beach and Vilano Beach minutes away, non-golfers in your group have premium beach access. For groups with mixed interests — couples trips, father-son weekends, or buddies who want nightlife after golf — this destination checks every box.
Courses · 6
TPC Sawgrass — Stadium Course
Resort · Championship
$550-$750
Best for: Bucket-list experience, serious golfers who want to test themselves on a PGA TOUR course, anyone who has ever watched THE PLAYERS on TV and wanted to stand on that 17th tee
Insider tip: Request a forecaddie even though one is included — they know every pin position and wind pattern. On 17, the hole plays longer than 137 yards because adrenaline and wind play tricks. Club up one. Also, play Dye's Valley the day before the Stadium to calibrate to Pete Dye's visual intimidation style.
TPC Sawgrass — Dye's Valley Course
Resort · Challenging
$175-$350
Best for: Groups who want the TPC Sawgrass experience at half the price. An excellent course in its own right — not a consolation prize.
Insider tip: The Valley Course was redesigned by Bobby Weed (a Pete Dye protege) and renamed from the original Valley Course. It shares the same conditioning standards as the Stadium Course at a fraction of the cost. Smart groups play the Valley on day one to warm up before the Stadium.
World Golf Village — King & Bear
Public · Moderate-Challenging
$65-$120
Best for: Groups who want to play a course designed by two legends (Palmer and Nicklaus) at a public-access price point. Strong value play.
Insider tip: The King & Bear is the only course in the world co-designed by Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus. Each architect designed alternating holes, and you can feel the style shift. The World Golf Hall of Fame is adjacent — worth a visit for golf history buffs, especially if someone in the group has a rain-delay afternoon.
World Golf Village — Slammer & Squire
Public · Moderate
$55-$100
Best for: Mid-handicappers and groups looking for a fun, playable round at a fair price. Good warm-up course before the TPC tracks.
Insider tip: Named for Sam Snead (The Slammer) and Gene Sarazen (The Squire). The course is designed by Bobby Weed with consultation from both legends. More forgiving than King & Bear with wider fairways and receptive greens. Book afternoon tee times for the best rates.
Ponte Vedra Inn & Club — Ocean Course
Resort/Private · Moderate-Challenging
$200-$350
Best for: Couples trips and upscale groups who want the luxury resort experience with ocean-adjacent golf. The Inn is a Forbes Four-Star property.
Insider tip: The Ocean Course was recently renovated by Bobby Weed and plays as a modern seaside design with expansive fairways and creative green complexes. The inn itself is old Florida elegance — rocking chairs, ocean breezes, cocktails at sunset. If your group includes non-golfers who want a premium beach and spa experience, this is the lodging pick.
Marsh Creek Country Club
Semi-Private · Moderate
$60-$110
Best for: Groups looking for a solid round at a reasonable price without the resort premium. Good for a third or fourth day when the budget tightens.
Insider tip: Marsh Creek is a Mark McCumber design that locals love and visitors overlook. The course winds through salt marshes with tidal views and plenty of wildlife. It is a genuine St. Augustine experience — less polished than TPC but more authentic in its sense of place.

Pro Tips
- 1
Book the TPC Sawgrass stay-and-play package through TPC Vacations at least 6 months in advance for peak season. The package bundles the Sawgrass Marriott with Stadium and Valley Course rounds at a significant discount over rack rates.
- 2
Play the Dye's Valley Course the day before the Stadium Course. Pete Dye's visual intimidation is an acquired taste — the Valley Course lets you calibrate without burning a $750 tee time while you're still adjusting to his design style.
- 3
On the Stadium Course 17th hole, the yardage says 137 but the adrenaline adds 10 yards. Take one more club than you think you need. Hit to the center of the green and take your par — the heroes who go pin-hunting feed the lake.
- 4
Stay in the St. Augustine historic district at least one night even if you're based at the Sawgrass Marriott. The 25-minute drive is worth it for dinner and nightlife. The Floridian and Ice Plant alone justify the trip.
- 5
Visit the World Golf Hall of Fame if you have a rain day or free afternoon. It is genuinely excellent and undervisited. Groups with younger players or golf-history buffs will love it.
